Play Southend Commissions Ten Bomb
Artwork installed at TAP (Old Waterworks, North Rd, SS0 7AB) from 9 May 2015
Do Southenders have the imagination, insights and local knowledge to make this town thrive? We know they do! People have come together since 2013 to experiment, play, imagine and debate the future of this town. They helped to shape the online game building too!
Play Southend is an online game for anyone to draw and play the future of their town. A project by artists Ruth Catlow (Southend) and Mary Flanagan (US), it was launched as first in a series of Play Your Place games. People create their own game level for Play Southend, by making a drawing of places in the town. Then they think about how it could be changed for the better. They devise their own rules, drawing obstacles and rewards; building and sharing game level after level for an epic play session. 160 levels of Play Southend have been created so far!
A number of local artists have also created their game levels, for example Heidi Wigmore and Nastassja Simensky, a spoken word collective Tory Town Poets, and now Play Southend have commissioned Southend-based street art collective Ten Bomb to create their own game as well as painting an impressive and vibrant 20 x 8ft Play Southend artwork which will be displayed on TAP Gallery’s fence from this Saturday 9 May.
Ruth Catlow said: “Ten Bomb at TAP brings together two of Southend’s great artistic resources. Many locals will be familiar with Ten Bomb’s stunning murals on London Road. Their vivid imagery is alive and funny and critical and moving and audacious in a way that perfectly reflects the spirit of Play Southend which invites local residents to imagine the changes they’d like to see in our town. Their images also translate perfectly to a game level. TAP provide affordable artists studios, a hub for experimental and daring new work and have supported the development of the project, by hosting workshops and putting us in touch with potential collaborators.”
About Ten Bomb:
Tenbomb is a Southend-based collective of artists producing eye-catching and unique artwork, using mixed media, from painting using acrylic, oils, markers, spray paint to graphic design and animation. Established 7 years ago, they have created many vibrant murals, interactive art displays, building props and sets for events and managed creative areas at festivals.
Ten Bomb said the focus of their Play Southend online game level is to ‘guide the character through the streets of Southend using the “Tenbomb machine” to reveal artwork behind boarded up closed shops, leaving a brighter, more appealing and more fun Southend.’
